Funny Name for Zelda Link to the Past Reddit
Comedy is hard to pull off in any medium, especially when it comes to games, and it must have been an even harder task for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy writers, who recently revealed they had no comedy experience. However, they pulled it off, as the Marvel game is hilarious and just as funny as its movie counterpart. But GotG isn't the only funny game that's been released over the past couple of decades.
While many comedy games don't hold up, such as Leisure Suit Larry or Duke Nukem, Redditors have reminded users of tons of games that are comedy gold. Between a parody of 80s movies, the cleverest puzzle game ever, and an assassin that uses some unique disguises, these games deserve more credit for their comedy.
Grand Theft Auto (2013)
Though it's a third-person shooter and open-world game, TheMayorOfHounslow believes that the Grand Theft Auto series are some of the funniest video games ever. The Redditor notes, "The whole series has hilarious stuff in it, from the dialogue, the ads, the radios, etc. I love satire." The newest game in the series, Grand Theft Auto V, is as close to an all-out comedy game as it gets.
Trevor is essentially the mouthpiece for GTA fans, as he's unpredictable and prone to random bouts of rage. Not only that, but Michael's son is a parody of online games, supporting characters in and around the Beverly Hills-influenced location mock celebrities' lifestyles, and the game is full of one-liners from the most minor of NPCs. Grand Theft Auto V is as close to a living, breathing city as a video game has ever come, and a large part of it is its social commentaries and satire on real life.
Far Cry: Blood Dragon (2013)
Far Cry: Blood Dragon is an interesting entry in the Far Cry series, as it's an expansion to the incredibly immersive Far Cry 3, which is about a group of backpackers who get kidnapped by pirates. But Blood Dragon, on the other hand, is about a cyborg who takes on dinosaurs that shoot lasers from their eyes.
Santi76 claims, "Blood Dragon was so damn funny. I was laughing constantly. So over the top." While the game would be better if it was an open world, as it'd be so exciting to stealthy roam around a huge map littered with dinosaurs, few games are as unique and funny as the 2013 release. The game parodies classic 80s movies like The Terminator, and it has a killer soundtrack to go with it too.
Grim Fandango (1998)
Grim Fandango has one of the most fascinating high concepts for a video game, as it follows the titular character, a Grim Reaper, who delivers souls to the afterlife and takes place in The Land of the Dead. ByzantineBobby advises gamers to "try the masterpiece Grim Fandango."
In the 1998 games, Fandango thrust into a noir mystery, and there's no other game that delves into the Halloween and noir aesthetic more, but it's just as funny too. It's in the same vein as Beetlejuice, Scrooged, or The Evil Dead with its inventive comedy horror, and afterlife elements.
Goat Simulator (2014)
A surprisingly huge market in the video game industry is simulators. There are so many strange ones on the market, whether it's the run-of-the-millFarming Simulator orSurgeon Simulator, which isn't for the faint of heart. But none is more random thanGoat Simulator.
JaryMane thinks it's the funniest game ever and loved its "controls and defying expectations (I went in thinking it was a legit goat game)." The "simulator" is more like aTony Hawk game than anything, as players roam around a small open world pulling ridiculous tricks. And one of the most notable and hard-to-pull-off tricks is called "The Michael Bay." Better yet, Goat Simulator 3 has just been announced.
Deadpool (2013)
Ryan Reynolds made Deadpool his own, and with every following Reynolds-starring movie feeling like a PG version of the franchise, the actor and character have morphed into one entity. But three years before 2016's Deadpool took the world by storm, Nolan North was spitting just as vulgar one-liners in the hilarious 2013 video game.
TheOlppoMan argues that the funniest video game ever is "Definitely Deadpool. It's a non-stop laugh-fest for about 7 hours." While seven hours is a little short and the gameplay left a lot to be desired, the game was a great introduction to the fourth-wall-breaking pottymouth superhero for many gamers.
Portal 2 (2011)
Portal 2 is a masterclass in storytelling, as little of the premise or decades-long backstory is told with exposition. Instead, players are fed little hints of what's going on and it builds a haunting mystery. But the puzzle game is surprisingly funny too, and even though comedy isn't its sole purpose, it beats out comedy games at their own game.
Hanebuch notes, "AfterPortal's jokes were beaten to death,Portal 2 still offered a hilarious script." The HAL-9000-like evil computer, GLaDOS, hurls hilarious insults at players as they fail puzzles time after time. And despite being hysterically funny, it still manages to blow players' minds with an astonishing ending and an overwhelmingly beautiful final song.
The Simpsons: Hit & Run (2003)
AnySimpsons-based video game will of course be funny, whether it'sThe Simpsons Wrestling or the tie-in gameThe Simpsons Movie. But the crown jewel in the Simpsons' video game series isThe Simpsons: Hit & Run, which is a parody ofGrand Theft Auto, but it also holds its own as a fun open-world game that lets players freely explore Springfield.
CopprRegendt reckons it's one of the funniest video games ever, and not much beats playing as Homer as he drives around in The Car Built for Homer. As the game is reaching its 20th-anniversary, a few games are more in need of a complete remake.
The Hitman Series
The Hitman series has been going for over two decades at this point, and it has impressively managed to maintain the same tone all this time. One thing that the Hitman movie adaptations couldn't pin down was the series' subtle comedy and dry humor, and Le_Castle_Vania posits, "Agent 47 is a comedic genius, who would've thunk?"
Agent 47 is one of the smartest video game characters ever, but he's completely socially inept. And his robotic dialogue as he tries to convince NPCs that he's a construction worker, a real estate agent, or even a vampire magician is comedy gold.
Bully (2006)
Being a free-roaming game developed by Rockstar, gamers expected Bully to be a more PG version of Grand Theft Auto, as players control Jimmy, an adolescent who is sent to the boarding school, Bullworth Academy. But the game stands on its own with an engaging story and excellent dialogue.
TheKillerDonut puts it best, explaining, "They're charmingly reserved with the writing. The character you play as relies on subtle quick wit for his humor, rather than over-the-top vulgarity." Jimmy is heroic in a way that few GTA protagonists are, but that doesn't mean that the game isn't full of comedy and goofy supporting characters. And it's such a beloved game that fans are still waiting for Bully 2.
South Park: The Fractured But Whole (2017)
South Park: The Stick of Truth was a surprise hit, and nobody ever expected a South Park game to be that great, but it was a sprawling comedy epic that felt like its own season. And its follow-up, The Fractured But Whole, is even better. Frodo-jenkins notes "I mean, you can't get past the title without laughing."
The game's subtitle is a double entendre typical of the comedy series, and though any form of media with a joke in its title tends to be low-quality, the same can't be said for The Fractured But Whole. The game builds on its predecessor, as the world is even bigger, the story goes even deeper, and just as the name teases, it's full of creatively vulgar jokes.
